WOW Mobile

The New Bedford Oceanarium seeks to make marine science education accessible for all. The WOW Mobile is a vehicle designed to carry engaging educational programs and scientific equipment into the community. The truck has bright, colorful murals created in 2005 by two exceptional New Bedford art students, Marcel Plante (New Bedford High School) and Sarah Vieira (Greater New Bedford Regional Technical Vocational High School).

The WOW Mobile can bring the Oceans to almost any venue in Southeastern Massachusetts—from Wareham to Westport and inland to Taunton. The focus is on experiential learning, using touch tanks filled with local wildlife, challenging learning activities and programs using scientific apparatus.

The foundation of all WOW Mobile activities has been to inspire a sense of wonder, discovery, beauty and adventure, and to encourage the idea that science can be interesting, creative, tangible and fun.

The WOW Mobile program focuses on marine biology, meeting not only the Science and Technology Standards, but many of the Massachusetts Curriculum Standards. The WOW Mobile has been active at many venues, including various summer camps, Summerfest, the Greater New Bedford Boys and Girls Club, the CS2 (Communities & Schools for Career Success at the High School), the Sea Lab Marine Science Education Center (a program of the New Bedford Public Schools), the New Bedford YMCA, the Greater New Bedford Boys and Girls Club, the Wareham Recreational Department, the Massachusetts Migrant Program, the Buttonwood Park Zoo, Clasky Park Farmer’s Market, and many elementary schools throughout New Bedford and Fairhaven.
