Explorium Journal

Thank you

We would like to thank our generous supporters!

On Summerfest Saturday, the Ocean Explorium welcomed approximately 700 visitors through its doors!  As the Sphere stirred imaginations, local vendors demonstrated ocean technologies used in New Bedford and the oceans beyond.  This overwhelmingly positive turn-out was matched by volunteers, interns and community partners who gave enthusiasm, dedication and energy--creating a unique experience for all.  Thank you!

  • Tor Bendiksen of Reidar’s Manufacturing for the loan of scale models of Groundfish and Mid-Water nets.

  • Paul Cabral of Euro Gear for display of various fishing net materials.

  • Brad Harris of SMAST for demonstrations of the SMAST Video Survey Pyramid.

OCEAN VOICE Speaker Series

Stokesbury, Ph.D., assistant professor at the School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth will present a talk “Using Technology to forward fisheries science, the sea scallop example”  Join us for a talk about the Sea Scallops of Georges Bank and the

Mid-Atlantic.  Sea Scallops, one of the most valuable fishing industries in the United States, faced risk due to overfished conditions.  Learn about technologies developed by SMAST, which included a video survey allowing an accurate measure of Scallops in open and closed areas along the historically significant fishing grounds of Georges Bank.
