TSUNAMIS: Lessons learned from 2004 and 2011, and the way forward

Doors open at 6pm for Science on a Sphere® presentation on Tsunamis
Talk begins at 6:30
Join us as Professor Avijit Gangopadhyay, University of Massachussets Dartmouth School for Marine Science and Technology will discuss Tsunamis – Past and Present.
December 26, 2004, Sumatra/Indonesia. March 11, 2011, Honshu/Japan. Two recent and devastating tsunamis, one in the Indian Ocean and the other in the Pacific Ocean, affected large populations in both the developing and the developed world. How did they happen? What did we learn from them? Warning systems are now in place; how are they working? How do Tsunamis generally happen? What is the difficulty in predicting them? What will happen to their frequency and impact in a changed climate? How real is the likelihood of a Tsunami in the Atlantic sector in the future? And how would such a tsunami affect the SouthCoast?

CLIMATE CHANGE: As Seen Through Artists’ Eyes

Doors open at 6pm for Science on a Sphere® presentation on our interconnected Earth
Talk begins at 6:30
Shifting seasons, climbing temperatures, and rising sea levels provide us with clear warning signs that our natural ecology is in flux. Please join author, artist and educator Peter C. Stone and Professor Arlene Mollo, College of Visual and Performing Arts, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, as they share their works visualizing change in our local beaches as well as the arctic. Explore how these images can used to help us understand the impact of long term planetary changes such as rising sea level, warming ocean temperatures and climate change.
Arlene Mollo is Chair of the Department of Art Education at CVPA, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Peter is a local artist and author and has founded Peter C. Stone Studios.
