The Ocean Explorium will host two presentations by Roosevelt Middle School students on Thursday, August 5, 2010.  One group of students will show a Power Point presentation of their experience building and operating a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV).  The other presentation will be the performance of a play written, directed and performed by students.  Based on lessons from the program "Voices of the Sea", the students will act out the lives of local marine animals.

NEW BEDFORD, MA (7 April 2010) — The Ocean Explorium at New Bedford Seaport welcomes "SEA & ICE: The Extraordinary Life of Captain Bob Bartlett", an exhibit that chronicles an era of Arctic exploration under sail.

Captain Bartlett was a renowned Arctic explorer who successfully navigated Admiral Peary to his discovery of the North Pole in 1909.  Owner of the Effie M. Morrissey, now Schooner Ernestina, from 1926 - 1946, Capt. Bartlett made annual trips to the Arctic for scientific expeditions and anthropologic studies.  Some of these excursions were sponsored by National Geographic, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Museum of Natural History.  Captain Bartlett and the Effie M. Morrissey also were commissioned by the U.S. Navy to survey the Arctic during World War II.

NEW BEDFORD, MA (25 February 2010) — The Ocean Explorium, with generous support from the Women's Fund of the Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts, announces the second annual Women in Science + Engineering (WiSE) speaker series.

NEW BEDFORD, MA (16 February 2010) — The Ocean Explorium announces a second speaker series, Cosmic Voice, will begin this week.

On Thursday, February 18, Kelly Beatty will present "The Sputnik Years".  A specialist in planetary science and space exploration as well as Senior Contributing Editor for Sky & Telescope magazine, Mr. Beatty states "When a Russian rocket lofted Sputnik I into orbit on October 4, 1957, the worldwide reaction was a mixture of awe and apprehension.  The Space Age - and the Space Race - had begun."

NEW BEDFORD, MA (30 September 2009)— The Ocean Explorium is about to launch a stunning new exhibit, which will take visitors on a celestial journey through the eyes of the world’s greatest space telescope ... Hubble!

The Ocean Explorium is inspiring inner city children through the creation of a mural at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater New Bedford. The mural’s theme—Pelagic Marine Animals—features whales, tuna, sharks, dolphins, turtles and more.

First there was a vision. Then there was The Sphere. Now, after years of hard work and anticipation, the Ocean Explorium in New Bedford has gone “live”.

It is open daily to the public with a vibrant and charismatic collection of marine animals from around the world.

"This is a great occasion for the city of New Bedford," said Mayor, Scott Lang, who officially opened the Ocean Explorium today at a ribbon-cutting ceremony with University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Chancellor, Jean MacCormack.
