Ocean Explorium
The Sea: we look to it for inspiration, sustenance and adventure. Our community is defined by the sea. Throughout our history we have taken both pleasure and profit from the waters that meet our shores and from the oceans beyond.
But how much do we know about the sea and the forces that act upon it? How can we be wiser and more effective stewards of this wonderful resource? How can we meet the challenges and opportunities that face our friends and neighbors who make their living from the sea? How can we ensure that our children will both love the sea and embrace its critical role in their lives?

Environments and Ecosystems
On March 13, 15 and 20, twenty instructors gathered at the Ocean Explorium for an intensive teaching institute on global ecosystems. The program employed Science on a Sphere (SOS) to display various ecosystems as viewed from outer space. Satellite images were compared to real world measurements of the ocean’s impacts on global ecosystems, food webs and individual species.
The institute was honored to have Dr. Frank Muller-Karger and Dr. Brad Harris, both of SMAST, share their research and experiences with participants.
Teachers were given various teaching tools to take back to the class room to communicate learned concepts to students.
