NEW BEDFORD, MA (25 February 2010) — The Ocean Explorium, with generous support from the Women's Fund of the Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts, announces the second annual Women in Science + Engineering (WiSE) speaker series.
Beginning Thursday, March 4, and running weekly throughout the month of March, women in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics will present highlights of their personal journeys and accomplishments. These stories celebrate hard work and achievement while they serve as a guide to future generations.
Scheduled to speak are:
March 4: Jasmine Smith-Gillen, Educator-Naturalist, Lloyd Center for the Environment; "Environmental Education: The Fun of Science"
March 11: Linda Andrade, Math Teacher and Math Coach, Global Learning Charter Public School; "The Accidental Mathematician"
March 18: Britt Raubenheimer, Associate Scientist, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution; "Curlers, Rollers, and Waves: The Science of Sand and Surf"
March 25: Dr. Stella Offner, National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics; "The Birth of Our Sun"
April 1: A culminating panel discussion and student-led question-and-answer session.
The Ocean Explorium encourages students to attend the WiSE speaker series and will work with teachers to ensure academic credit for their participation. Students are welcome to attend each week's talk and prepare follow-up questions for the culminating panel.
Doors open at 6:15 pm each Thursday in March for refreshments and mingling in the Ocean Explorium before the talks begin at 7 pm. On April 1 there will be a reception beginning at 6 pm for WiSE speakers and participants followed by the panel discussion at 7 pm.
Admission is $3 Adult, $2 for Senior / Child. Students through Grade 12 are admitted free of charge for the Women in Science + Engineering series.
