The Ocean Explorium is inspiring inner city children through the creation of a mural at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater New Bedford. The mural’s theme—Pelagic Marine Animals—features whales, tuna, sharks, dolphins, turtles and more.

Art and Science Inspire!
The Ocean Explorium is inspiring inner city children through the creation of a mural at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater New Bedford. The mural’s theme—Pelagic Marine Animals—features whales, tuna, sharks, dolphins, turtles and more.

 

Now in its third year, the mural project concludes a summer of learning about marine life and ocean science. The Pelagic Marine Animals mural will fill an entire wall, opposite last year’s painting of a vibrant coral reef.

 

“We’re so excited to see such wonderful work from these children,” said Ocean Explorium education coordinator Abbey Spargo. “It’s extraordinary how their experience with live animals has inspired them to create such a vibrant work of art.”

 

Throughout the summer, the Ocean Explorium’s WOW Mobile has made weekly visits to the Boys and Girls Club, where children have been encouraged to handle marine life and science educators have instructed them about ocean ecology. Ocean Explorium interns have helped students develop their artistic talents and encouraged them to act on their curiosity about the oceans and marine life.

 

The children have also visited the Ocean Explorium where they participated in Science on a Sphere® presentations, interacted with marine life and were guided through hands-on learning activities.

                                                                                                                                              

A mural dedication ceremony will be held on Monday August 24 at 10:00 AM at the Boys and Girls Club, located at 166 Jenney Street, New Bedford. Local media are invited to join the board members and staff of the Boys and Girls Club and the Ocean Explorium for the occasion. Media are also welcome to visit the Boys and Girls Club on August 20 and 21 from 10:00 AM—12:00 PM to catch the children in action as they add the finishing touches to the mural.
