Fishing and whaling concentrated expertise in boat building, rigging, navigating, processing and marketing. Marine industries continue to evolve to meet the challenges of food and energy production, port & maritime security, and research. Join Susan Peterson, Ph.D., for a talk about the marine industries that have shaped New Bedford, our region and New England!


Susan Peterson has a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Hawaii.  Susan worked at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution for over ten years, specializing in ocean policy, and several years at Boston University in the same role. Most of her work was quantifying and qualifying commercial and recreational fishing effort so that the cultural, social and economic motivations for fishing could be incorporated into fishery management decisions.  In the mid-1980s, she left academia for industry.  She founded and was President of Ecological Engineering Associates (EEA), a company that uses natural systems for wastewater treatment, from which she retired in 1998 to do full-time consulting.

Frank Muller-Karger is the dean of the School of Marine Science and Technology at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth.  A biological oceanographer, his research on marine environments is conducted through satellite remote sensing, large data sets, networking, and high-speed computing. Currently, his work includes assessing the importance of continental margins, including areas of upwelling, river discharge, and coral reefs in the global carbon budget, using satellites that measure ocean color and sea surface temperature.

Kevin Stokesbury is assistant professor at the School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST), University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Kevin will talk about sea scallops, one of the most valuable fishing industries in the United States. Learn how technologies developed by SMAST, which include a video survey system, allow the accurate measurement of scallops in open and closed areas along the historically significant fishing grounds of George's Bank; a wonderful story of scientists and fishermen working together to rejuvenate a fishery.

The Ocean Explorium will open its doors every Saturday from 10-4pm (last tour begins at 3pm) and Thursday evenings for a Speaker Series, while continuing construction.

 

The Ocean Explorium currently features the Science on a Sphere®. This magnificent blue marble floats in space, clearly demonstrating environmental issues that effect planet Earth, in three-dimensions.  Developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Sphere is a dramatic way of understanding our planet.    


The Ocean Explorium offers FREE ADMISSION while under construction and hopes citizens of the greater New Bedford and Southcoast, as well as seasonal visitors, will stop in!
